Article Databases:

Gale PowerSearch databases - on campus or off-campus w/ library card
Articles from academic journals, popular magazines, newspapers and books; excellent set of general periodical databases.
Best for articles on recent historical topics (within the last 10 - 20 years)
 

·         To search for a specific topic, click on the Advanced search mode to search for multiple concepts.

·         When search results are first displayed, only magazine articles are shown, if available for your search.
Click on the “Academic Journals” tab to display journal articles, click on "News" to display news articles; click on "Books" to display book articles.

History in Context
- on campus or off-campus w/ library card
Reference articles, primary documents, and full-text magazine, journal and newspaper articles covering all aspects of U.S. and modern world history.
Best for general/background history information, especially articles under the “Reference” category

·         Enter search word(s) and click the Search button

·         At results page, articles are organized by type -- "Reference" (articles from reference books), "Academic journals", "Primary Sources", "Images", “News” & more.

·         Click on the title of an article to display the full text of the article.. 

·         Click on the title of an article to display the full text of the article.

·         You can email or print any article by using the buttons at the top right of each article (Under “Tools”.)


JSTOR - Scholarly journals archives
- on campus or off-campus w/ library card
Back issues of important academic journals, including many historical journals (no current issues) going back to 1838.
Best for in-depth academic journal articles on all historical topics except: recent history and articles published within the last 3 – 5 years

·         For a basic/general search, enter search words & click Search

·         To search for a specific topic, click on Advanced Search, and then enter search words for multiple concepts in the separate search boxes

·         To search for exact phrases, put quote marks around the phrase, e.g. “Thomas Jefferson” or “freedom of the press”

·         To limit your search to regular journal articles (as opposed to book reviews or editorials), click in the “Article” check box under “Limit by

·         If too many articles are found, click on "Modify Search", add additional search words & search again

·         To email, print or save an article:

o    Click on “PDF” (at the upper right of the page) 

o    A new window with “JSTOR's Terms and Conditions” will be displayed; click on OK
[If your browser blocks pop-ups, you need to hold down the CTRL key while clicking on “OK”]

o    When the pdf image file is displayed, click on the “Email”, “Print” or “Save a Copy” icons (on the pdf task bar at the top of the page)*

o    To email the full article, click on “Send Copy”, then enter e-mail address in "To:" entry box and click "Send"*

Google Scholar: Google’s academic search engine accesses a wide range of academic articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, and universities.  The majority of sources are usually abstracts (summaries) of articles, which do not provide the full-text of the article (or a significant charge is required for the full article). In many cases, you may be able to retrieve the full-text of these articles by using the Skyline College Library Article Delivery Service.

·         Put ORs between terms for the same concept

·         Put quotes ( “ ” ) around phrases



Books:

The PLS Online Catalog is the online catalog to find books in Skyline Library and in all libraries in the Peninsula Library System.
After clicking on the link above to access the catalog, follow the steps below:

To search for books in all libraries in the PLS system:

·         Type search words (keep your search words broad) in the first search box & click Submit.

The search results will show books and other materials in all libraries in the PLS system.

·         To Limit your search results to materials at Skyline College Library:

·         Click on Modify Search near the top of the screen.

·         You will be brought back to the search screen and your search term(s) will reappear.

·         Scroll down to the Location selection box (2nd box under Limit to: below the search boxes),

·         select Skyline College in the Location box,

·         then click the Submit button.

To search for books only in Skyline College Library:

·         Type search words (keep your search words broad) in the first search box.

·         Scroll down to the Location selection box (2nd box under Limit to: below the search boxes),

·         Select Skyline College in the Location box,

·         Then click the Submit button.

Pew Hispanic Center: research reports & fact sheets on topics such as Hispanics in the military, results of surveys of Latino populations, news, and related links.

California Latino Demographic Databook: selected census information detailing "characteristics for Latinos by national origin, nativity, citizenship, and period of entry for the foreign-born", and providing comparative figures for non-Hispanic whites, blacks, and Asians.

Hispanic Population of the United States: Detailed tables from the US Census show selected social and economic characteristics of the Hispanic population. The social and economic characteristics presented in the tables include age, sex, marital status, educational attainment, occupation, employment status, family and household composition, income, and poverty status. National Council of La Raza: Well-organized web site from this policy focused organization provides extensive annotated lists of NCLR publications for sale, news briefs on issues such as health, education, immigration, and policy, and an unannotated list of other Web sites of interest. In English; includes search engine. 

Hispanic Online: Leading site in terms of delivering quality content and information, and perhaps the only one to do so in English, including Hispanic Magazine, Vista, and others - this portal has a distinct advantage over others in providing authoritative and lengthy articles. In English; includes search engine for portal contents only.

U.S. Latinos and Latinas & World War II Oral History Project: More than 400 interviews documenting Latino WWII experiences.

Chicano Art Digital Image Collection: A collection of nearly 1,400 works from artists demonstrating "a strong identification with the Chicano Movement and a commitment to the ideals inherent in Chicano art.

Latino USA: Radio journal of Latino news and culture, in English, from National Public Radio.

Hispanic Genealogy Center: Links for genealogical research

Online Hispanic Health Resources: A collection of annotated Internet resources that "pertain specifically to the health concerns of the Hispanic and Latino population or provide some or all of their content in Spanish."

Latinos & gangs:

Nuestra Familia / Our Family: Project of the Center for Investigative Reporting documenting Latino street gangs of Northern California, whose stronghold is based not in the inner cities but surprisingly, in farm towns like Salinas, Merced, Modesto, Visalia and Tracy.

National Alliance of Gang Investigators Associations (NAGIA): This site presents gang information, including expert articles not otherwise accessible online, links to local and national organizations, links to gang conferences and training, details about graffiti and taggers, and the NAGIA's National Gang Threat Assessment.

Gangresearch.net: Website dedicated to providing quality research on gangs to students, academics, public officials, the media, and the general public. While most "gang" websites either present the views of law enforcement or give unverified or questionable information, gang research.net seeks to dispel stereotypes and present research, original documents, and helpful links.”

The International Reach of the Mara Salvatrucha: National Public Radio (NPR).feature on the Latino street gang Mara Salvatrucha, also know as MS-13, whose reach is thought to extend through Central America, Mexico, and the U.S. Includes audio clips, a photo gallery, and links to related news stories and Web sites.

Latino Teen Pregnancy Prevention Project: Brief information for U.C. Davis based organization.

The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy: This organization's mission is "to improve the well-being of children, youth, and families by reducing teen pregnancy, includes FAQ, national and state data, reports, fact sheets, and related information. Searchable. Some material also available in Spanish.

Sexuality Information and Education Council of the U.S. (SIECUS): Promoting the concept that sexuality is a natural and healthy part of living, SIECUS provides information on sexuality issues, responsible sexual choices, and the rights of individuals. Topics include teen pregnancy, gender issues, HIV/AIDS, reproductive rights, sexual education, and more. Find articles, annotated bibliographies, reports, fact sheets, and more. Some material in Spanish.

Hispanics/Latinos and Diabetes: Extensive information from the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse

Diabetes among Latinos in California: Disparities in Access and Management: This fact sheet examines diabetes management and access to care among Latinos with diabetes in California.

National Hispanic/Latino Diabetes Initiative for Action: Information from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

 

Community Information Program (CIP) & Organizations with Volunteer Opportunities

The CIP database contains information on health and human service agencies serving San Mateo County and the Bay Area. Fairly extensive descriptions exist for the agencies, including addresses and telephone numbers, but also the names of executive directors, eligibility requirements for service, fees, access by public transportation, wheelchair accessibility into the building, target populations, languages other than English spoken by agency staff, and a narrative description of the services.

Volunteer Center of San Francisco (VCSF)
A clearinghouse of volunteer information for San Francisco nonprofit organizations, individuals, city agencies, and other civic groups, VCSF also develops more specialized programs for people with disabilities, youth, corporate volunteers, potential board members, and more. The site has a searchable database of organizations desiring volunteer, lists of specific volunteer opportunities, advice for nonprofits on recruiting and working with volunteers, and other information, some of which is also provided in Spanish.
